14-Week Residence Hall Closing Procedures
- The Halls close at 8:00 pm on Friday, May 16th for those students who are no staying for interim (and are not involved in graduation).
- The halls close at 8:00 pm on Saturday, May 17th for graduating Seniors and those involved in graduation.
- You must check-out of your room within 24 hours of your last exam, unless you are staying for interim or involved with commencement.
Residence Hall Closing Checklist
You are responsible for returning the room to the condition it was in when you arrived. Much like living in an apartment, you are responsible for cleaning the room and furnishings prior to departure. Here are a few reminders of tasks to be completed as you prepare to check-out!
- __ Empty out all drawers and leave them open for inspection
- __ Flip mattresses up for inspection under bed
- __ Remove everything from your door and walls
- __ Clean off any double-sided tape, mounting tape, or any other adhesive residue that is on your door or walls
- __ Defrost and clean out your MicroFridge
- __ Put Resnet cord, cable cord, and HUB on desk
- __ Vacuum the floor (NOTE: $15 charge for not vacuuming!)
- __ Clean any large or small messes in room (NOTE: $85 charge for unclean room!)
- __ Dust furniture (this includes the top of the bookshelves, and the shelf in the closet)
- __ Replace any burned out light bulbs
- __ Return loft rental (see hours outlined in this handout)
- __ Rearrange the room the way it was arranged at the beginning of the year. You can see room set-ups on the Residence Life website (NOTE: $15 charge for improper arrangement!)
- __ Close and locked window
- __ Close curtains
- __ Take out any remaining trash and recycling
- __ Turn off lights
- __ Lock the door
- __ Make sure the hallway outside of your room is clean and clear from clutter. Hallways are considered an extension of a room, therefore, it too should be clean.
- __ Don’t forget your bike (in the bike racks, or bike storage room)
- __ Also, if your hall allows storage, don’t forget items in storage.
** Failure to clean your room properly will minimally result in the charges outlined above and could result in additional charges!!
Summer mail will be forwarded to your home address or permanent address you indicated on your housing contract. If you will not be at the above address, you must complete a forwarding address card (see the hall desk or your CA). Magazines and newspaper will not be forwarded so be sure to notify your publishers directly.
Lofts
- Return loft, and all its pieces, to Lot #32
at one of the following times: Thursday, May 8th 3-7pm and Friday, May 9th 9-5pm
- Plan ahead! Early or late returns are not permitted. If you can not make the scheduled times, a friend, roommate, or designee may return the loft for you.
- Failure to follow procedures may cost you a lot of money:
- Without record of your return by our personnel, you may be charged the replacement cost of a loft, beginning at $250.
- Improper loft return will result in a $50.00 charge. If you leave your bed loft in your room when you check out of the residence halls, you run the risk of being charged for the replacement cost of the loft.

Express Check-out
The XPress Check-out process has been developed to make your check out as efficient as possible. YOU DO NOT NEED TO NOTIFY YOUR CA OF YOUR DEPARTURE DATE OR TIME. You do not need to make an appointment to check-out with your CA. Follow the process below for XPress Check-Out:
- Perform the cleaning steps itemized in this brochure.
- Fill out the front of the attached Xpress Check-Out Envelope. Sign and date the Xpress Check-Out envelope indicating that your room is ready to be checked.
- Place your keys (and Fob for Taylor/ Donner/Scott) in the envelope (your CA will have extras should you lose yours) and seal the envelope.
- Place the completed and sealed envelope into the Xpress Key Slot located at or near your Main Desk (look for designated signs). Deskworkers WILL NOT accept Xpress key check-out envelopes. Use the designated key slots only.
** Failure to follow these steps could result in associated charges. Final inspection will be conducted when rooms become vacant or immediately upon closing.

Helpful Hints for a Successful Checkout

- Vacuum room and closets!
- Make sure you remove all items from closets, desks and dressers. Check on top of the closet shelf to make sure you have removed everything.
- Make sure the light bulbs are working. Pick up a replacement bulb from the front desk.
- If something is broken or does not work, MRF it (#2329) as soon as possible!
- TV cables, HUBS and RESNET cables should be left in your room on the desk.
- Large garbage bags will be in the lounge for you to use.
- Please use the large dumpster outside the building to dump unwanted objects
- Areas will be labeled in the building for recycling of lumber, USEABLE furniture, phonebooks and clothing. Other recyclable items must be placed in the appropriate containers.
