ResNet Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ overview

Can two computers be connected in a Residence Hall room?

There is only one data jack provided in each residence hall room; however, the MIO can provide a temporary mini-hub to two roommates so that two computers can be physically connected through it to the one data jack. Only roommates are allowed to use mini-hubs. Click here to find out more or contact ResNet for details at (920) 424-0863.

Taylor Hall has a port per pillow allowing both roommates to get online without the need of a hub.

Can I connect a gaming console to ResNet?

ResNet allows students to connect 2 devices per person, this includes gaming consoles. ResNet technicians do not support your gaming consoles and we do not guarantee online connectivity to gaming servers. You can also play LAN games on your console throughout your floor on ResNet. This should not require you to be registered with ResNet.

How do I find my MAC address on my game console?

    X-Box
    • Turn on X-Box with no game in the disc tray
    • Choose X-Box Live from X-Box Dashboard
    • Choose Connect Status screen, select settings
    • The MAC Address will be on the bottom right corner
    X-Box 360
    • Go to the System Area of the X-Box Dashboard
    • Select Edit Settings
    • Go to additional settings
    • The MAC Address will be on the bottom right corner
    Sony Playstation 2/3
    • Load up the start-up cd in the PS-2/3
    • Go through the testing of network connection (this should fail)
    • Press select button
    • The MAC Address should now be displayed

Is ResNet available off campus?

No. Only Residence Halls and campus buildings are wired for this kind of access. Buildings off campus are not a part of the University, and thus are not connected to ResNet.

What is a network card, and why do I need one?

A network adapter is a computer component, installed internally in a computer (or attached externally on certain Macintoshes) that allows the computer to access the network. Synonymous terms are “Ethernet Adapter” (referring to the network standard at our University) and “NIC” (Network Interface Card).

Why won't MIO technicians install network cards?

Sometimes complications arise when installing network cards. Neither the MIO, nor the university, are able to take responsibility for such complications. Therefore, we recommend that you have a certified technician install the network card. If you install the network card yourself, pay close attention to your computer manufacturer’s warranty statement; you may void the warranty by opening the computer and working on it yourself.

What are network drivers and why do I need them?

Network drivers are software that allows your computer to communicate with your network card. Without them, your computer will not be able to connect to the network. Drivers should come with the network card when you buy it.

What do I do if I buy a new computer while connected to ResNet?

Anytime you get a new network card, regardless of if you purchased a new computer or not, you need to go through the registration process again. The network will not allow you Internet access until you go through the registration page again.

Does ResNet require special software?

No. Assuming you meet the minimum support requirements for ResNet, your operating system software and your network card drivers will be enough to allow you to connect to the Internet. Beyond that, all you need is your choice of software to access the Internet.

Can I connect to online services such as AOL, MSN, as well as any ISP through my ResNet connection?

Any online system that offers a TCP/IP connection to the Internet can be accessed through ResNet. In most cases, however, having an online service isn't necessary while you are a UW-Oshkosh student. You are already provided your own e-mail account and full access to the Internet.

What do I need to be prepared for a ResNet technical call?

Please have your network card driver disk and operating system CD-ROM available for use in troubleshooting. If it is necessary to reinstall your network card’s software drivers, your operating system CD-ROM is almost always required. Also, if you have the original software driver disk that came with your network card, it saves the technicians the trouble of finding out exactly which card you have (some models of cards are very similar to different models and can make it difficult to troubleshoot).  Also see our ResNet expectations.

Can I get in trouble for downloading copyrighted material?

Yes! The University will investigate all copyright complaints and forward the required data to the proper authorities.
