Welcome to Residence Life
Jacque Bollinger
Assistant Director of Residence Life-Staffing
Dear Candidate,
Let us "Illuminate Your Future." This theme accurately represents the professional experience of the former and current Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) and Assistant Residence Halls Directors (ARHDs) who are working or have worked for the Department of Residence Life at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Former staff members have reported that their time as an A/RHD at UWO allowed them to build skills that they continue to use today in their professional careers beyond the A/RHD position. Our current staff contribute daily to the productivity of our department and are our most valuable resource. They are gaining experiences that will illuminate their future careers and lives.
As you conduct your job search, you will find that many housing or residence life programs are similar in structure and mission. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish one program from another. How do you make this distinction? How do you know if a position is the right one for you?
As the Assistant Director of Residence Life-Staffing, it is my job to recruit and hire the best people I can for our RHD and ARHD positions. During my tenure in this position, I have found that candidates with the following qualities tend to be successful at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
- Strong work ethic. Are you ready to go above and beyond expectations to meet the needs of students living in the residence halls?
- Ability to work autonomously. Can you "take the ball and run with it?" Are you a self-starter?
- Welcome and embrace change. Are you willing to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem?
- Team oriented. Do you appreciate the power of a team and are able to contribute positively to team efforts?
- Student focused. Is the growth and development of students the focus of? How you do your job?
- Ethical. Do you lead your life with integrity and honesty?
- Ability to stay challenged. Do you welcome new and different experiences? Do you constantly strive to improve yourself as well as the department for which you work?
- Comfortable in "the gray." Do you understand that often problems and crisis are situational and cannot be addressed with a formula or written policy?
- Appreciation of humor and fun. Can you find fun and humor in daily tasks? Do you believe in the adage "working hard and playing hard?"
If you find the skills and qualities listed above to represent you as a person and a professional, then a Residence Hall Director or Assistant Residence Hall Director position at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh may be the next step in the Illumination of YOUR Future. We hope you will give us your fullest consideration.
Sincerely,
Jacque Bollinger
